The Moviola Minutes: 07. 24.13

Annex - Valentino, Rudolph (Blood and Sand)_01

Here’s The Moviola Minutes for your Thursday:

Want to know what Rudolph Valentino sounded like? Here are 2 recordings of Valentino’s singing voice (h/t Brandie Ashe, owner of True Classics and contributor here at The Moviola)

Looks like Google is taking another crack at the video streaming biz. Yesterday the internet giant introduced Chromecast, a dongle (insert childish snickering here) that plugs directly into the HDMI port on the back of the television. The initial channel lineup is minimal, but the ability to watch anything that’s in your Chrome browser looks promising. Here are a couple reviews:  Gizmodo and The Verge

Over at The Dissolve, they have just announced the movie for next week: It’s Always Fair Weather (1955) starring Gene Kelly, Cyd Charisse, Dan Dailey, and Michael Kidd. It may not be our favorite musical, but we wholeheartedly approve of this pick.

This week the great character actor Dennis Farina died. Check out these tributes by our friends Terry at A Shroud of Thoughts and Tony Dayoub at Cinema Viewfinder.

The lineup for the 70th Venice Film Festival has been announced. Films include Terry Gilliam’s The Zero Theorem starring Christoph Waltz, Tilda Swinton, and David Thewlis (!!!!!), James Franco’s take on Cormac McCarthy’s Child of God, and Peter Landesman’s directorial debut with Parkland. Of course we’ve all known for a while that the Festival will screen the much anticipated, sure-to-be-a-trainwreck The Canyons.

See you tomorrow!
